Police have arrested a man for an attempted robbery that occurred Friday morning near the Swing Bridge in Belize City.

At 8:55 AM, a 43-year-old sales clerk at Simon Quan was walking across the Swing Bridge heading toward Albert Street to make a business deposit. That's when a robber wearing a hoodie and a fisherman-style mask approached her from the opposite direction. He grabbed and pulled at a black cross-body bag she was carrying over her shoulder, causing her to fall to the ground.

He made several attempts to snatch the bag, which contained business cheques, but was unsuccessful. During the struggle, Flowers said she was punched several times to her body before the suspect fled in the direction of North Front Street near the Pink Boutique.

Police later detained a 23-year-old man on Hydes Lane who fit the description. Nothing was stolen during the incident.

Today in court Robert Derrick Stewart pleaded not guilty after being read two criminal offenses, wounding and attempted robbery.

And even though there was no objection to bail, Magistrate Dennison denied him saying he was disturbed by what the victim alleges happened which landed her in the hospital.

When he heard he was going to be remanded, Stewart told the judge that it's a bad time of year to go to jail. But the judge scolded him saying, "this is the Christmas Season. You attempted to take instead of giving,"

With that, Stewart was remanded and his next court date is set for February 3, 2026.
