A seven-year-old boy from southern Belize is recovering after an accidental shooting on Sunday that left him hospitalized with injuries to his lower back.
According to his mother Diana Xi of San Antonio Village, her son, Jesse Cal was at a nearby family farm with 27-year-old Bernardo Bolon when the incident occurred. She reported that while the pair were checking on their corn field, the child was picking green corn when Bolon accidentally discharged a pellet gun. The projectile struck Jesse in the middle lower back, causing injuries near the spinal area.
Police observed a single gunshot wound to the child's lower back and took him to the hospital. Jesse is in stable condition but may be transferred to Southern Regional Hospital for further evaluation, as the pellet remains lodged near his pelvic bone. Additional medical assessments will determine whether there are any internal injuries.
