In the 3 decades that he has been painting, the legendary Pen Cayetano has signed his name to well over 1000 pieces of art and his works have been displayed in galleries from Berlin to Belize. But Cayetano's latest piece is not going to be displayed in some fancy European gallery but rather it is in the middle of the Battlefield Park in downtown Belize City. It's called "The Mighty Two" and pen took a break from working on his new masterpiece to tell us all about it.
Pen Cayetano, Artist
"I am just doing a chair for the town and this piece is entitled 'the mighty two' yeah and its a little about working together but its entitled the mighty two."
Keith Swift,
Why did you choose to do this piece, in this park, and on that seat?
Pen Cayetano,
"Well I came this morning at about 10 and I saw some of the chairs were already occupied on the other side there so I saw this is the first chair people see when they come in off the main street so I think it needs to be attractive to the people them."
Keith Swift,
Now will people still be able to sit on this chair since it is now a work of art?
Pen Cayetano,
"Oh yeah well I would like them to sit on my chair too and I really like that they have this art exhibition so artists are just doing art on the open art in Belize city. It's something new but I think it's worthwhile for the city."
"The mighty two" was scheduled for completion by this evening. The paint was provided by the City Council. Cayetano returns to Germany later this week. He said he will return to Belize next summer with his children.
