So will the September Celebrations Committee budge? Well, it's more or less controlled by the Belize City Council and Treasurer Marva Gardiner who is the City Council's Revenue Manager says it's just bad luck for the tenth that it falls on the second Saturday in September.

Marva Gardiner, September Celebrations Committee
"Traditionally Carnival is usually the second Saturday in September. Fortunately, or unfortunately, this year the tenth of September is the second Saturday in September. So that is the first reason why the tenth was chosen as carnival day."

Keith Swift,
Can you see their logic in that having the carnival on the tenth takes away from the observance and celebration of the tenth?

Marva Gardiner,
"Personally I don't think so. If you look at the tenth of September in the past you would go to the ceremonies, you look at the parade, and there's an activity at the Yabra Green which should go until six o'clock but when you go out there three o'clock there's nothing there."

Keith Swift,
They are saying the tenth of September which is a day we should never forget is already losing interest and to put an event like the carnival on that day, you will kill it.

Marva Gardiner,
"The thing is that it is just this year. It won't happen until the next three or seven years before tenth becomes the second Saturday in the month of September again. I as a young person see it as something to bring up the tenth because when the parade finishes you go home, you rest a little bit, you go out to Yabra and there is usually nothing there. This year there'll be something three o'clock for you to come out and see.

Looking at it, we don't see it working. If it so happens that somebody, higher than me, puts carnival on the eleventh, we will have to have other people working it because I cannot split myself into four."
