Catholic Bishop O.P. Martin Retires

He made history when he became the first Belizean-born Bishop in 1984 and now, 22 years later, Osmond Peter Martin has announced his retirement. The Catholic Presbytery today confirmed that his retirement has been approved by Pope Benedict.

Auxiliary Bishop Dorrick Wright has now been appointed the Bishop of the Diocese of Belize and Belmopan cities. The 61-year-old Wright was ordained as an Auxiliary Bishop in April of 2002.

O.P. Martin is presently away seeking medical treatment. He has suffered with severe back problems for many years. He will be 76 on December the fourth.
