If there is a teacher who has inspired or changed your life then you still have time to nominate him or her as the outstanding teacher of the year. The award will be handed out next week as part of education week. The week will be observed under the theme: "education transforming lives, liberating spirits, and improving Belize."

The deadline for submission was last Friday but now it has been extended to Wednesday. Chief Education Officer Maud Hyde made the media rounds today to appeal for more submissions and highlight other activities scheduled for next week.

Maud Hyde, Chief Education Officer
"We expected greater participation and I think we really want to emphasize today that given the extended deadline, we would certainly wish that the public would take a few minutes, take time to reflect on the teachers that they have come into contact with in their growing up, and really put forward somebody that they feel has made a difference in education.

Along with the Teacher's Award we are also awarding an outstanding school, a school that has made the difference in children's lives; a vibrant, innovative, creative school, and a child friendly environment. And again we are asking the community to make that recommendation. Also part of Education Week activity the Ministry will be holding an open house at the House of Culture.

Again, as I mentioned earlier, the Ministry of Education works with a huge portion of the national budget so I think the public needs to know what we are doing by way of providing service in the various units and service areas of the Ministry. So our units will be out there, personnel will be out there with various exhibitions and information sharing so that the public can really get a good insight."

Again for those interested in nominating a past or current teacher you need to submit an essay of 500 or more words explaining why the teacher is outstanding. You can drop off submissions at the Ministry of Education's office on North Front Street. Education week begins next Monday with a radio address by the Minister of Education.
