And the school has been engaged with the Ministry of Education. While SPHS is not a government school, the Minister of State, Dr Louis Zabaneh, told us today that their main concern is the safety of the students.

"I had one question regarding San Pedro High School, school is about to open on Monday and the largest building on the compound has had a building collapse on the third floor."
Louis Zabaneh, Minister of State, Ministry of Education
"The Ministry is engaged with the management out there to assess properly the safety of those buildings so I know that our leadership has been fully apprised of what's going on and the priority of course is the safety of our children across the country and we want to make sure that all classrooms are safe for our children."

"Does the ministry conduct a building assessment? I know a lot of schools are really really old."
Louis Zabaneh, Minister of State, Ministry of Education
"Yes we do have a unit that works across the country who go and visit the different schools to look at these requests because most of it comes to us. You know we have 312 primary schools we have 62 highschools and so a lot of it has to come from the schools to our district education centers and then the information comes to us to the central ministry and then we send people to look at those particular cases, but yes there is an ongoing review of these buildings because that's very important and where necessary as you know you've heard from time to time new school buildings are being inaugurated because we know that certain schools require these buildings to be put in place."
Just a clarification, it is a room on the second floor that experienced the collapse, not the third.
