Teachers are to be paid on the last Friday of every month, but that was not the case for the teachers at Corozal Community College and Junior College. The teachers have not received their final pay for the month of September allegedly because of administrative issues arising between the school management and its Finance Office.
But, the teachers want their pay - and as a result of this, the teachers staged a walk out this afternoon at both the high school and junior college. Classes were cancelled, students were sent home and parents were notified that the teachers were on strike and the remaining classes for the afternoon had been called off. We have been told that teachers will not be paid until October 1st. We have not received any info if classes will resume tomorrow or if the teachers will continue to strike - but most likely the latter.
In a live post last night, here's what the BNTU president said:
Nadia Caliz, President, BNTU

"We have received reports of some of you not being paid and we need to know how many of you are not being paid so through this medium I am encouraging you to touch base with your branch executive they will provide us with your name, your school and management those are the three things that we need. I am also aware of the fact that it is not a large group because from June both the BNTU and the ministry have been working hand in hand to ensure what happened in 2024 and what happened in 2023 as it pertains to so many teachers not being paid in September we were able to reduce those numbers significantly. What I can tell you though because we have been working closely together is the fact that late submission the late submissions from management and school admin contributed to some of you not being paid another thing has to do with the fact that there is a glitch on the end of MOE for those of you whose license expired in July or ending of June the system will have you up to the ending of June because they have not been ensuring they take into account the rule that says if you work the ten months in the year you are entitled to your July and August salary that has contributed to that so we are working on that we are working on that to ensure that those of you who did not get your vacation salary that you get it.The other thing we are working on to make certain that your salary is up to par is to ensure that you have contact with MOE through the links that we have right now. We need to make sure that by the time you get your adjustment you are at the correct pay point, but if you don't come forward we can't assist with that. But I want you to know we are aware of the problem and we are working on it."
