And in Belmopan, the Ministry of Sustainable Development held a closing ceremony for the Belize Urban Resilience and Disaster Prevention. This was a 1.2 US million dollar project that was in collaboration with the Embassy of Taiwan to improve the drainage in the Cayo District.

The Eta and Iota floods of 2020, and the flooding caused by Hurricane Julia earlier this year, revealed how vulnerable the western district was to extreme flooding. The water covered cars and rushed into low-lying houses.

And after it left Cayo, the floodwaters headed to the Belize River Valley, which is why today also saw the launch of the 1.6 US million dollar project entitled "Flood Warning Capacity Improvement for the Belize River Basin."

At the ceremony, the minister, Orlando Habet, explained more about both projects.
