Today, the Ministry of Health and the Department of Environment again warned against the consumption of fish caught in the Macal River because of excess mercury levels.
Last month, a mercury test was done on 3 of the fish species that live in the Macal River, namely: the Bay Snook, Baca, and the Botasi. This test revealed the mercury levels that were as much as 2 a quarter times the recommended mercury levels in the botasi or lup, and even though the tests show a decrease in levels in the bay snook, it is still above the recommended limit.
Finally the Ministry of Health warns that the consumption of mercury can cause significant long-term health issues.
