The cumulative COVID numbers from the weekend have not yet been released - but, if they follow the trend of recent weeks -they are likely to be high.
And while the ever - rising COVID numbers are alarming, the vaccination numbers provide a bit of relief since we've passed the 200,000 mark for residents who have gotten at least one dose.
Over 150,000 residents are fully vaxxed, including those ages 12-17, who can only receive the Pfizer vaccine. But one 12-year-old in Stann Creek had a scary experience on Saturday when the nurse on duty accidentally gave him the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which is not approved for children.
The minor, Osborne Chun, took his consent from around 9:30 to the vaccination site in San Roman village. When he got home, his mother, Diana Chun, saw that grave mistake that the nurse had made. And like any mother, she was extremely concerned about what the J&J vax could be doing to her son's body. She contacted the Ministry of Health and Wellness and even though Osborne had no symptoms, the ministry suggested that he be admitted to the Southern Regional Hospital for a 48 hour observation period. During that time, the child suffered from fever, chills, headache and the area around his eyes was swollen.
But this afternoon when we spoke with his mother, she told us that he was doing much better, and was being discharged from the hospital. When we asked if she would seek legal action, she told us that she has requested a meeting from Minister Michel Chebat and would await his response before taking any further action.
