And while there are over 7,000 active cases in Belize currently, there is still concern that this number can dramatically increase with Belizeans travelling back and forth over the borders. While you can contract COVID right in your own home or during your daily routine we still asked the Minister of Health if he expects numbers to spike back up. He said he believes that with the proper protocols in place, it will go smoothly:

Hon. Kevin Bernard - Minister of Health and Wellness
"We have to be prepared for anything and that's why we are putting these measures in place so that we can capture whatever issues right then and there, it's all about control, trying to make sure we can control the spread of this virus. Remember this virus is passed on from person to person so if we are able to put in the mechanism in place at the border points that would be able to capture these things and minimize the risk then that's the only thing I can say. I know that Dr Melissa can add more but I can tell you that we are prepared at the ministry of health to have our team in place, we're hoping that we can have a very smooth reopening at the border. Somebody asked me yesterday, you think that Belizeans will flock the northern border on Monday? I doubt that. A lot of Belizeans are still wary of what is happening across the border and so.. and once everybody understands the protocols I think that there will be some smooth transitioning once we open the border on Monday."
