Over the years, the Vital Statistics Unit has gotten a well deserved bad name for forcing Belizeans to travel hundreds of miles to wait in a line at dawn for service. But, the office is trying to improve its image through its Civil Registry Project, which recorded a historic number of 7,791 births and 1,588 deaths.

This was done through several birth registration clinics throughout the country. A release says, "This initiative made vital services including, deed polls, certificate applications, correction of errors, and regular and late birth and death registration, accessible to those living in remote communities."

In May, a clinic was conducted at Yemerie Grove in the Toledo District, in June and November, mobile clinics were held in Santa Cruz and Independence villages in the Stann Creek District, in August, mobile clinics were conducted in San Ignacio Town and Belmopan, In November it was Orange Walk Town, and there are upcoming mobile clinics in the Cayo and Corozal districts in early 2024.
