The Ministry of Health and Wellness has launched an internal investigation into the death of an infant that occurred this morning in the village of Camalote, Cayo District.
The 18 year old mother of 1 year old baby Shawn Armstrong, gave her child half of a prescribed deworming pill just after 9:30 am.
Moments later the mother, Sarina Welcome, noticed that the baby began to experience difficulty breathing, and so both parents rushed the child to the Western Regional Hospital.
Upon arrival baby Armstrong was unresponsive and no heartbeat could be detected. The medical team discovered that an object resembling a pill was lodged in his airway and could not be removed. After several attempts to resuscitate the child, Baby Armstrong was pronounced dead at 10:11 AM due to suspected foreign body obstruction.
The deworming pill was reportedly prescribed to the child by the Western regional Hospital. The Maternal and Child Health surveillance team is in charge of the investigation. We expect that one of the questions they will be looking at is whether the medication was available in suspension form.
