Earlier this month, you saw that most of the senior court judges were foreigners, something that the NTUCB had a problem with. They issued a press release complaining about the state of the country, saying that it must be rotten if we are depending on foreigners to administer justice in Belize. Minister Usher said that the Judicial and Legal Services Commission are in charge of putting out vacancies and making recommendations to the Prime Minister.
Henry Charles Usher, Minister of Public Service, Political & Constitutional Reform
"For judges and legal officers, their terms and conditions are determined by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission and they put advertisements out when there are judicisl vacancies and when persons apply, they determine and they make recommendations to the prime minister as to who those judicial appointments should be."
"So then the prime minister of course consults with the Leader of the Opposition. So really, I believe it is a question for the Judicial Legal Services Commission to see why it is that when there are vacancies that we are not getting Belizeans to apply for these vacancies and if they are applying, why is it that they are not being considered. I'm not sure of what is happening at the commission level, but certainly with something that they would have to answer."
