A case of Meningitis has been confirmed at Holy Redeemer Primary school in Belize City.

The school administration today informed parents that an Infant 1 student had tested positive for Meningitis. The 6 year old was at school for half day on Monday and so the child's class was asked to remain at home today as a precautionary measure. School continued as normal otherwise.

A team from the Central Health Region is investigating the case and a spokesperson from the MOHW says "we can confirm that it's not Bacterial Meningitis. We await further lab results." Bacterial meningitis is generally considered to be the most infectious. And it's also what claimed the life of 9 year old Jayce Brown last month in Belmopan.

But, in this case, the Ministry of Health says this child, quote, "is well at this time from our observations."

A press release from the Ministry half an hour ago calls it "a potential case of meningitis..." And adds, "Preliminary laboratory results suggest that it is not bacterial meningitis, and that the child is currently in good health…the ministry is...implementing recommended measures in schools and among individuals who had contact with the child."

In a letter to parents, the school administration advises parents to monitor their children for headaches, nausea and vomiting, stiff neck and other symptoms.
