Belize and Guatemala were back at the negotiating table in Antigua, Guatemala today. Belize's Chief Negotiator Assad Shoman met with Guatemala's Minister of Foreign Affairs Jorge Briz with the presence of a senior representative from the Organization of American States.
According to a release from the Guatemalan Embassy, the ministers discussed an agreement on new confidence building measures to be signed at the OAS headquarters in September. As for the territorial dispute, the Guatemalan release says that there will be a "framework agreement for negotiations that would allow for the identification of a mutual agreement on the relevant issues of fact and law to achieve a definitive solution....through the political and juridical means established in international law..."
We're not quite sure how this renewed round fits into the entire ongoing process, but that the Guatemalans are, in earnest, back at the table is a good sign but, then again, the statement that they hope to "achieve a definitive solution through juridical means" points to the international court.
Again, all this information is from the Guatemalan Embassy in Belize as Belize has not sent out a release.
