The Nicaraguan Government has broken its ties with Taiwan, declaring that they see the island nation as part of Chinese territory rather than a self-ruled nation. There are now only a little over a dozen countries who maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan, including Belize and Guatemala. China has been picking off Central American allies steadily over the past few years with Panama, and El Salvador switching in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

And now it's Nicaragua, prompting China's foreign minister Wang Yi take a shot at the US for, quote, "pressuring" other Central American countries not to switch recognition from Taipei to Bejing.

This pressure, added with what Wang Yi called, "money diplomacy" is what he believes are keeping other countries from doing the same as Nicaragua.

But Taiwan is standing strong, saying that it would not change its quest for self determination and effort to uphold democracy and freedom as well as their participation as a sovereign nation. According to Taiwan's foreign minister, all Taiwanese officials and engineers stationed in Nicaragua will be recalled.
