One year ago the Maritime Wing of the Belize Defense Force was restructured to become the Belize National Coast Guard. Now 50 men and women strong and with a fleet of 8 vessels the Coast Guard is celebrating its first anniversary. Marking the occasion the organization took time out today to look at its accomplishments thus far and plan for the future. Commanding the Coast Guard is Admiral Cedric Borland and he explains that the past year was all about making it all work.
Admiral Cedric Borland,
"Today we celebrate one year of service. The year for us has been capacity building in addition to providing support for safety and the detection of illegal activities at sea. The presence of the Coast Guard at sea has had some positive impacts not only on safety, but also on the development of maritime industries. We expect that our support and cooperation will only get better as we all work towards creating a maritime environment free of illegal activities and conducive to economic prosperity."
At the ceremonies recognition was given to those who've contributed to the organization of the Coast Guard, in particular to Lieutenant David Treleaven the U.S. military liaison officer who is ending his tour of duty in Belize. He will be replaced by Lieutenant Colonel Tammy Mactamara.
