Last year Belize faced possible U.S. sanctions because the State Department said that government wasn't doing enough to clamp down on trafficking in persons. Well the news tonight, Belize has been taken out of the U.S. State Department's bad books for human trafficking.

The 2007 trafficking in persons report upgrades Belize to a tier two country, meaning that Belize is meeting the State Department's minimum standards for cracking down on human trafficking.

And the crown jewel in this effort are the two police officer who were busted in February with 8 Central Americans in a van, victims, authorities said of human smuggling.

That just about sums up the trafficking highlights for the past year and gives some sense of scale to an imagined problem whose existence is more a diplomatic issue than it is a statistical one.
