The cost of living, it’s higher than ever, and it is a matter of particular political pain for the Barrow administration, elected on a promise to bring down the cost of living, no matter what. And that’s why Cabinet has agreed to give out $2 million in food subsidies. The money was set aside in the budget and will be distributed through the welfare programme at the Ministry of Human Development. Two thousand persons will be added to the existing number of 1,500 who already receive assistance. The subsidy, which in many cases is paltry, will be doubled or even quadrupled according to an official release.
The $2 million is being drawn from the Petrocaribe fund. Details on who will qualify will be released later.
