So, that National Party Council meeting will be held on Saturday, February 29th. At that meeting, the party will set the deadline for candidates to submit their names for party leader, and the date for a convention. Any member of the National Assembly can apply to be leader. Peyrefitte, who is a Senator has said he will not apply. But, what about John Saldivar? He still hasn't sent in a letter of resignation. We asked about that today:
Reporter
"But Sir is it a matter of concern for you, that as chairman, the leader elect has not formally submitted a resignation although he said via Facebook post that he would be resigning as party leader elected?"
Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"No, it’s not a concern for me. You could take it any which way you want. You get two descent lawyers in a room and they can give you two different arguments on the same matter and they both sound good. The former leader elected is not indicating that he is challenging his resignation or anything to that effect. So, that’s not an issue for us."
Reporter
"So, as far as you’re concerned, he has constructively resigned? I know the UDP likes that term."
Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"As far as I am concerned, yes, he has resigned."
Reporter
"Will John Saldivar resign as party elect, as he said he would a week ago?"
Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"Well, he said that he has stepped back already."
Reporter
"But you know he hasn’t sent in a letter."
Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"And apart from that. Well, I don’t know about that fact, but I think John Saldivar has accepted that he will not enter the race."
Any applicant would have to be reviewed and approved by the party's ethics committee.Â
