In one week he's gone from one of the senior generals in the Barrow administration to Nestor Vasquez, private citizen.
The Office of the Prime Minister today announced that the 89 year old accountant and founding member and trustee of the UDP submitted three resignations this morning: first, as Chairman of the Social Security Board Investment Committee; second as member of the Integrity Commission; and this as Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank of Belize. This is after he stepped down as BTL Chairman on Tuesday.
The whirlwind of resignations comes after it was revealed on Monday that Vasquez - who also owns Channel 7 - ran up hundreds of thousands of dollars in bills on the BTL corporate credit card.
Well, at its board meeting yesterday - the first that Vasquez didn't chair since he re-assumed the chairmanship in 2009 - a new Chairman was named, and he is Allan Slusher - who is a former Central Bank Governor, former UB President and BTL Director.
A release form the company says, quote, "an independent auditor is being contracted to ascertain and provide certification of the allegations of misuse of the company credit card by the (former) chairman of the board."
An assessment is also being made of all fiscal checks and balances - which permitted the alleged credit card abuse.
And, also a two year contract that BTL signed with Channel 7's parent company, Tropical Vision Limited in January of this year is also under review.
The release from the board says that it is, quote, "taking necessary steps to reconcile and rectify weaknesses that resulted in this unfortunate incident."
