The general election is 36 days away - and the political parties are preparing feverishly for the big day that will determine everything in the red and blue political constellations.

For PUP Party Leader John Briceno, it is a chance to be the first Prime Minister in our country's history who is not from Belize City.

And, it is a chance for him to break his party's almost 15 year losing streak in all major national elections going back to March of 2006.

A big moment of possibility for the PUP - but when Jules Vasquez spoke to him via Zoom today at his divisional office in Orange Walk Central, he said the announcement of the date was anti - climactic.

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Finally the date was declared yesterday after weeks of speculation. What was your emotional feeling when you saw the announcement?"

Hon. John Briceno, Leader of the Opposition
"Actually it was anti-climatic. But at the same time like okay its set, let's go for it, we have a few more weeks to convince the Belizean people."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"When one thinks about it it's really idle, having this entire nation in suspended animation for all these weeks and no one knowing how to plan anything because election is coming. Is this something that should change? Should we have fixed date elections if we really want our democracy to mature?"

Hon. John Briceno, Leader of the Opposition
"You made the exact point, because of the uncertainty. Belize has been in autopilot since I'll say from April. That is why one of the things that we are saying thet we need to amend the constitution. We need to have a fix date that 5 years is 5 years. I would rather have an election in March, simply because it's not raining and its cold, but that's a decision for the parliament to decide. Everybody should know that it is going to be the first Wednesday of whichever month or Sunday or Saturday whichever day the parliament sees fit."
