There has been no final decision by the Election and Boundaries Commission on what provisions will be made for those persons with active COVID infections to vote. Right now, the number of active cases is 817 - most of them voting age.
And, one prominent UDP politician is among them. Tony Herrera, the UDP candidate for Corozal Southeast is at home with minor symptoms of COVID 19 after he tested positive. Of greater concern is his wife who has been hospitalized.
We asked Briceno if his positive test is a sobering moment for all politicians out on the campaign trail:
Jules Vasquez, reporter
"The situation with Mr. Tony Herrera, the UDP candidate for Corozal Southeast. He is infected. I know his wife regrettably is also I am told and for you guys this has to be quite a sobering reality check, because even though you limit your campaign, you take your measures, there will be situations. People want contact. People want to hug you, people want to shake your hand and you can't be washing your hand every minute though you try - you will forget one time."
Hon. John Briceno, Leader of the Opposition
"One of the things that I hate most about this campaign is that once I leave with someone I have to be washing my hands. I just despise that, I mean to my very core, but we have be safe. We have and people understand that. A minister called me on Sunday and informed me that one of his candidates has Covid. He did not disclose the name and appealing to me to please be careful and I appreciated his concern. Now that we found out that its Tony Herrera we want him to get well quick and his wife and hopefully that he did not get anybody else in the family sick. It is a sobering reality that we must take into consideration at all times. Even now in my office here in Orange Walk Central or in my office in Belize City we are insisting that everyone keep on their mask at all times."
