It has been one week since the Christian Workers Union called out the Belize City Council for blatantly lying to the press about requesting a discussion about their CBA proposals. CWU has been hounding CitCo for the counterproposals since last month after they rejected the council's deadline of March 31.
The CWU clarified that they are not looking for a signed CBA, but rather an opportunity for negotiations to start before the Municipal Elections.
Well despite the lengthy press conference CWU held to explain this, CitCo is standing their ground. According to a letter they sent to the union today, they reiterated their refusal to bind another administration to a CBA. They also don't want it to seem that they are trying to attract votes through a lucrative CBA. They also said that the negotiations should be done with a clear mind and sound judgement.
The Council is planning to draft a counterproposal that will be immediately available for the duly elected council to review and adjust as they see fit.
And to show that they will prioritize the CBA if they are elected, all members of the PUP's City Council slate signed the letter, which promises a counter proposal by March 31 and a signed CBA by April 30.
We reached out to the president of the CWU, Evan Mose Hyde, who said that they met with the Ministry of Labor yesterday and they will meet with the Council on Friday.
