Last night, we told you about Ian Jones' fight against the Government of Belize and the National Sports Council.
He was the Director of Sports at the Sports Council up until the end of November last year. That's shortly after the Briceno Administration was swept into office. According to Jones, he was informed shortly afterward that he was being terminated due to his political opinions. He's a devout UDP supporter and Patrick Faber disciple, so, the new administration gave him his walking papers.
The problem is, though, that his termination isn't cheap. He had a 2-year contract from May 2020 to May 2022. It appears that he intended to step down amicably, just as long as the new administration paid out his contract.
We understand that he has been waiting for the National Sports Council to make him an offer on what his severance will be. None has been forthcoming for several weeks now, and so, his attorneys started writing the Council. Jones has written them several lawyer letters to put them on notice that if they don't initiate conversation, he will sue them for breach of contract and wrongful termination.
And what is he asking for? Well, one of those lawyer letters says that he is demanding, quote, "$186,115 dollars as payment for salary and gratuity for the full remaining two years of his contract, and damages for breach of his constitutional rights." End quote.
We understand that Jones has recorded proof of his termination, in which the new head of the National Sports Council states clearly that it's nothing personal, just politics.
