This morning, Belize City Council staffers were greeted with this internal memo from their own Human Resources Department.
It offers them membership and what are called promotional 14% rates in JBW Finance Company Limited. That would be Bernard Wagner's Finance Company owned by the Mayor. On the City Council website it lists him as the owner of, quote, "JBW finance Co. Ltd a microfinance and payday loan business entity operating in Belize City." End quote.
The memo advises interested employees who want to get credit from the mayor's firm to sign up with the HR department.
Now, it would seem to be a rather blatant conflict of interest - using an internal council memo and mechanism to get business for his own company - but before we cast judgement we'll wait to hear from the mayor.
We contacted both city council public relations staff for a comment today - and are waiting on a response.
