And here in Belize City the CWU is still licking its wounds after losing one of the major sources of revenue for its members, the stevedores. The UDP is backing the Union after the PUP signed off not he deal to send sugar. south.
In a press release sent yesterday, the Opposition said, quote, "The...(UDP) expresses deep disappointment at the recent decision... In these already challenging times, the stevedores of the Port of Belize are now subjected to further decreases in income with the loss of this source of employment." End quote.
The UDP is asking the government to take a second look at this decision, which it asserts was made in the interest of a select few.
And, in a release today, the Belize Progressive Party says, quote, "The BPP cannot condone any leadership that tries to stifle the most economically depressed people in our country….The BPP continues to stand in solidarity with the Stevedores, the cane farmers, and hardworking Belizeans struggling long before the pandemic to fight for their rights as workers and essential contributors to the economy." End quote.
