And in what may also be perceived as a conflict of interest Senior Superintendent Daniel Arzu is offering himself as a candidate for village council elections in his home of Georgetown.
But, is he legally allowed to do that? Some opponents suggested otherwise, and today, we asked the Police Commissioner about it:
Chester Williams - Commissioner of Police

"I know for a fact that Mr. Arzu had asked my permission to go into the village council election for Georgetown. I had offered no objection to it because he is on his way out. Mr. Arzu is retiring this year. He should be proceeding on pre-retirement leave very shortly. And so, if it is that he wants to go down that route, I don't see a difficulty with it. I think he said he is going to be running as [an] independent, which shows that he is not affiliating himself with any political party. And let me say that this is not unprecedented. We have had many police officers before who are part of village councils and in some cases, they have run under particular political party slates and they were allowed to do so. So I do not see an issue with it, no."
