And after the House Meeting, the media also spoke with the Prime Minister, who also gave his thoughts on Marijuana Referendum.
He spoke about the cost of the referendum which, of course, will come out of the public's purse. But he says most of that money will go towards public information.
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Well obviously it's going to come as under cap 2 and it is an expense that we will have to do. If you look at this is a pittance to what was spent for the ICJ so they are trying to hold down the cost. The cost of a referendum is not only what it will cost for the elections and boundaries commission. What they will spend but also there has to be an information campaign so that people can truly understand what is it, what is going to happen that is the question and inform people properly. So that when they go to the polls they can make a decision based on what they believe they should answer the question. I wish it could be delayed. At the beginning I was one of them, I was saying maybe we should have the referendum and get it over with earlier, but when they told me that it was going to cost as much as 5 million dollars, I said it's really too much and 5 million dollars we could use to help people to get food on the table or help kids to go to school, there are so many other things that we can do. Maybe we can talk to the churches if they would prepare to say to hold it back and that when the time comes that we've worked out all of these issues and we are ready to actually put the law into effect to hold the referendum before we do that. I am prepared to speak with them and ask them if they are prepared to do that, but we cant hold it back anymore. It is out of our hands."
