We all got a class in "Know Your UDP Constitution" back in June of 2021 when the so-called Caucus for Change triggered a recall vote of then leader Patrick Faber. That recall ultimately failed to get the two thirds needed to recall Faber - but the damage was done, and the precedent set.
And now, the opponents of current leader Shyne Barrow are out on the campaign trail trying to trigger their own recall. Reports say these include Patrick Faber, Tracy Teagar Panton and Alberto August. We've been hearing about them out on the trial for about two weeks - and now, reports say they have gathered the number of signatures needed to trigger a recall.
That's about 172 delegates who would need to have signed their support for a recall of Leader Shyne Barrow. Reports say they plan to submit the signatures to the party secretariat by Friday.
If so, that will trigger another round of upheaval for the UDP - leading to another recall vote where the required threshold for support is much higher. We should note that the Shyne Barrow camp claims that many of those who signed are withdrawing their support for a recall.
Of course, that's politics, where truth is often a moving target. We'll keep following it and let you know what develops.
