And in political news, as municipal elections near, the questions remain whether Bernard Wagner will vie for a third term as mayor of Belize City. He has maintained that he will only run if he is endorsed, and would step down if there is a convention. We know that at least one of his councillors, deputy mayor Allan Pollard has also put in his name to be the mayoral candidate this time around.
But up to now, Mayor Wagner says there hasn't been word of what the party will do.
Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City
"I still have not received any feedback on that matter, I honestly have not received any feedback and so I continue to wait just as yourselves. I continue to wait. I believe at the end of the day the party will make the decision and that is their right to make that decision."
Courtney Menzies:
"Reports are that there are over 40 candidates going up for councillors, different councillors, what do you make of this?"
Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City
"It clearly shows that people want to serve under the PUP banner, people are optimistic and they like the work we are doing here, we have been doing tremendous work all across the city for the past 6 years even through Covid, so that is why you have 40+ people wanting to represent the PUP in this upcoming elections."
Courtney Menzies:
"Some people have cynically said that this is the "time fi eat" phenomenon where this is the best time to join the party right now."
Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City
"Yeah, you could put it that way as well but the bottom line is that when you are doing good, people want to do good, generally speaking, people want to do good and if they see that your brand represents good, represents transparency, represents progressiveness, they want to be a part of that and that is what we have stood for, for the past six years."
