UDP caretaker for Cayo North Omar Figueroa has resigned. Figueroa who won a by-election in 2014 and then the general election in 2015. He served one term as Minister for Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, and Sustainable Development.

Although he lost in 2020 and 2025, he was still holding the fort for the UDP. But, not anymore. In a text message to his colleagues, Figueroa says, quote, "I have resigned from my position as the Cayo North caretaker. Continuing in this position would mean that I will be forced to fight against what I believe were premeditated, sinister and malicious attacks against my character in an official meeting of the National Party Council. These attacks were baseless, unethical and should have never taken place in my absence…it's best I step aside and ensure that the party does not endure another ugly internal battle."
