The buzz over the Belize Elite Basketball League has begun, with their first game set to happen this Friday at the Belize Civic center.

Concerns have been raised however regarding ticket prices and the expenses to utilize the sporting complex.

At the BEBL Press conference the league commissioner stated that they may be facing up to $90,000 in overheads to utilize the civic center. We asked the minister of sports about this today:

Rodwell Ferguson Minister of Sports

"At the moment remember there was a contract with a foreign company and that contract expired and so the minister of infrastructure said that it was best if he take over the civic center because of the high costs. And the ministry of sports remember sports is quasi government so the government gives them a certain percentage and it is the responsibility of sports to figure out how they can raise the additional funds that they need."

"In terms of the civic center it is very expensive to maintain I think the minister had a conversation with the semi pro basketball and he told them that they can allow them to work out free everyday if they want to but just the weekend activities is an expense that they have to cover and so they try to get through so they can cover on the weekend and see what they can do as they go along but I believe eventually it will see how the government will figure out a way to assist the athletes. As the minister of sports I am trying to find a solution now and once that solution works then we will see a difference."
