And while this young athlete is one who is getting a break - what about others with that talent. We asked about building a culture of excellence:
Jules Vasquez:
"But how do you increase the culture and caring that has to accompany excellence in sports."
Anthony Mahler, Minister of Youth Sports
"Well you do that from peewee level. So you start instilling them the doing the right things from a very, very young age. So that's a program that we're looking at right now. Just a couple of weeks ago we welcomed 23 peace corps to help us teach physical education and different sporting discipline within schools. And I believe that that then translates into high school. And then you, raise a level there as well, and then tertiary level, and then semi-pro basketball, football, whatever it may be."
Jules Vasquez:
"With basketball specifically how can Belize asset itself or maintain a status as the powerhouse in Central America and the Caribbean, I suppose."
Anthony Mahler, Minister of Youth Sports
"So, one of the things Minister and I have been talking about is how we want to bring some coaches, some high level coaches into Belize."
"Make them train some other people to provide the skills necessary for shooting Guard. Point guard and small forward. And we send as many of our young people to Division one, two, three schools or wherever they can go."
