Gas prices are at record highs all over the world, and just the same in Belize, where tonight - the news is that - starting at midnight - a gallon of premium gas in the city will cost 17 dollars and 60 cents. In Punta Gorda - where fuel is most expensive, it will cost 17 dollars and 85 cents.
This is in line with global trends, where in California, for example, a gallon of premium is almost at 7 US dollars per gallon right now.
And while Premium is at a frightening new high - the government subsidized cap on regular, diesel and kerosene remains in place, so those prices are stable.
12 days ago, the topic of fuel prices came up during a press encounter with Public Service Minister Henry Charles Usher - who explained that they can hold down regular and diesel, but - with public finances as they are - doing the same for premium was a bridge too far:
Henry Charles Usher - Minister of Public Service
"We always made sure that whatever decisions that we made that would not affect the July 1st announcement that the salary would be returned. That was the number priority, but we had to make sure that we held down the price of diesel and the price of regular fuel. People are complaining about the price of premium, but we just made a decision listen we can't hold all of them down, it would be too much of a financial impact on the country and there is an option, if you don't want to put premium in your vehicle you can put regular. We feel that is a compromise that would be accepted."
The price change takes effect at midnight.
