But while the council waits on that garbage tax the Mayor says that they've done well in 2023 when it comes to property taxes. He credits the three-tier first-quarter discount system that ended in March.

Reporter:
"With property tax payments what was it like during this discounted period?"

Bernard Wagner, Mayor, Belize City

"It was the best that we've had in sometime, for years, having the tiered system where you have the 15 percent, the 15 percent and the 5%, um, we were able to see substantial and people taking advantage of that offer, more than we have seen in years before so we are very thankful for it but again always continue to press our residents to make your plan for your property taxes. We still are grappling with the fact that many of the properties in the city, um, they have indigent people who cannot pay, we have the elderly who may be unable to pay as well and so we are looking to work along with the local government to come up with some sort of write of for some of those indigent property owners. Some of the elderly in our society and if not in terms of the principal amount at least the all the penalty charges that are added on to their property tax. We want to see that get off the group this year."

Again, property tax for anyone who didn't take advantage of the discount became due on April 1st.
