And after that event, the president had her last Belizean lunch before departing the country. Her flight left at around 2 this afternoon, but she's not going home just yet.
While President Tsai made local headlines here in Belize, she's about to make global ones at her stop in Los Angeles. That's where she will be meeting with Kevin McCarthy, Speaker of the United States House Of Representatives.
It's a meeting that will be watched by millions of eyes across the world - especially those in mainland China, as President Tsai attempts to walk the fine line between asserting her country's autonomy and avoiding igniting a crisis with Mainland China.
While in Belize, though, her visit was significant, as she met with government officials and the governor general, further strengthening the ties between the two countries. The highlight of the visit was the joint Special Sitting of the House of Representatives where a joint resolution of parliament said, quote, "Belize continuously extends unwavering support to Taiwan in safeguarding its democracy and freedom..." End quote.
The president also had the chance to view ongoing Taiwan-assisted projects, and announced the commencement of a general hospital for San Pedro
On her second day in the country, she emphasized the confidence she has in Belize's friendship with Taiwan. And though she jetted off today, we will continue to monitor the progress she makes as she attempts to solidify Taiwan's ties in the west.
