A woman was raped in the early hours of Sunday as she was walking to the KHMH to seek medical attention. She told police that around 3:00 that morning, she was on Belcan Bridge when she saw a man on the opposite side. The man followed her onto Princess Margaret Drive, where he grabbed her from behind, and assaulted her with a knife. He then pulled her to the side of the street and raped her.
And today, the man accused of this crime, 21-year-old Rupert Codd, a call center agent, appeared unrepresented in front of Senior Magistrate Baha Shoman. He was read a single charge of rape and due to the nature of the offense, was denied bail. Codd was remanded to court until June 6.
And court records show that this wasn't Codd's first run in with the law. He was indebted to the court for $2,005 after being caught outside after curfew during the pandemic state of emergency in 2020. Codd explained that he couldn't pay the fine, and so a warrant was sent for him to serve one year in prison, effective today.
Codd also had another conviction earlier this year, where he was ordered to pay $3,005, but that is not due until October 6. He also has two other cases pending before the court - one for attempted burglary and another for damage to property.
