Yesterday in court 34 year old Clinton Ebanks pleaded guilty to two counts of theft, three counts of damage to property, and one count of each of handling stolen goods and escape; all crimes he committed, incredibly, while he was in the police station detained for questioning in another incident.
Ebanks was in police custody at the Sandhill Police Station when he allegedly broke the lock off his cell, escaped with the police handcuff, and stole a constable's bike which he did later return. And yesterday in an extraordinary move, after hearing the full story in which Ebanks said he was tortured into a confession, Magistrate Lord refused the guilty pleas.
Now those seven charges aside, Ebanks was arrested for stealing $761 worth of Cashew wine and other items from the Belize Cashew Growers office in Sandhill and he pleaded not guilty to that charge.
Ebanks is not out of the woods though because in addition to those charges, he owes the court $1200 for a previous conviction. Once he pays up, he will be released on bail.
