As they have been doing for the past 7 years, at dawn tomorrow morning hundreds of Belizeans will rise and set out an ambitious 10 mile walk.
No it is not their regular morning aerobic but rather the as many 500 people will take the long walk from Ladyville to Belize City for the annual cancer walkathon as part of cancer awareness month. Secretary of the Cancer society Kathy Esquivel told us who will walk tomorrow and why.
Kathy Esquivel, Secretary Cancer Society
"It's people from all walks of life, people who have had a relative, people that are interested, companies, individuals; and lots of people."
What is the significance of the cancer walk?
Kathy Esquivel,
"As I said it is kind of an awareness and it's becoming a tradition and I think people do it because it shows that they are willing to do something to make other people aware."
How long a walk is it going to be?
Kathy Esquivel,
"It's about 10 miles, it's a long walk I have to admit because I do it every year but it's done very early in the morning and it's good for us."
As the treasurer of the Belize Cancer Society, how important is tomorrow's walk?
Sandra Gonzalez, Treasurer Cancer Society
"It's important to us first of all because we are not a government funded agency and so we get a small stipend from government every month and the bulk of our money that we get is through fund-raising so at the office we are selling t-shirts; the white ones for $12 and the colored ones are $17."
Tomorrow's cancer walk begins at 5 am in front of Celina's Store in Ladyville. Buses will leave the city at 4 and 4:30 am. The walk ends at the Juliet Soberanis Orosco Center.
