35 year old Robertino Daniel Oprescu today appeared in Magistrate's Court.
Oprescu appeared before Magistrate Earl Jones where he was read two indictable counts of possession of a false document, specifically two false share certificates for Tropical Holdings Company. With that the prosecutor Jacqueline Willoughby objected to bail on the grounds that as a Romanian, Oprescu is a flight risk and he has no status in Belize. For his part Oprescu told the court that he's not wealthy and has a common law wife and child to support. Even so Magistrate Jones remanded Oprescu until June 24 of during which time he can apply for bail. But by that time, he'll likely be facing more charges as the larger matter of embezzling from the KHMH is still pending.
He has reportedly confessed to setting up two fake companies Bustitich and Imperium for the purpose of swindling the hospital and those charges should come down next week. And more than all this, he is wanted in his home country where he is to serve a prison term of 3 years for fraud.
