The early hours of sturday morning were wild. Two men came under fire and they weren’t gang members or home invaders; one was a Customs officer and the other was a security guard. We’ll tell you what happened to the Customs officer in a bit, but first to the security guard. He’s lucky to be alive after gunmen who wanted his firearm shot him three times. Jacqueline Godwin spoke to him today.
Jacqueline Godwin Reporting,
Today it was business as usual at the Northern Fishermen Cooperative on North Front Street but things were far from normal around one twenty on Saturday morning. This bullet hole left behind in a partition wall in one of the buildings at the back of the compound is a reminder of just how close forty five year old security guard Roger Myvette came to losing his life.
In fact the employee of Triple A Security is recovering at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. He was shot to his left upper leg, right rib cage and left side of the chest. He had been shot by three men who had broken into the compound to reportedly steal the security guard’s gun.
Roger Myvette who is a Honduran national told 7NEWS the terrifying ordeal lasted only five minutes.
Roger Myvette, Shooting Victim
“I was sitting down when I saw two men come from the waterside, from the back of the compound, they did not tell me anything. I saw them and got up.”
Roger Myvette who has been on the job for only eleven months was overpowered by his two assailants. The men then took him into changing room. Once they got inside the building, Myvette did manage to fire a shot from his licensed 38 revolver but the men managed to grab away the weapon and then shot the security guard three times with his own weapon.
Roger Myvette,
“I was afraid at the time and after they pulled me into the room, they searched me, that is when I took out my gun and I fired two shots at them. I do not know if any of them got hit but they just cursed me, grabbed my gun and shot me.” They shot me first in the leg. I do believe they wanted to kill me for my gun.”
The men did manage to make good their escape with the stolen thirty eight revolver. On Tuesday the tube that is helping Roger Myvette to breathe is expected to be removed.
Roger Myvette,
“Thank God, the bullet did not fracture any of my bones in my leg and there are no serious internal injuries. I do not know if my company will give me back my job. I do not know if I will return.” If my company wants me back then yes, I will go back to work.”
As for the men who shot Roger Myvette, well they remain at large. Police recovered three expended nine milimeter shells at the scene. Jacqueline Godwin reporting for 7NEWS.
All police have been able to ascertain at this time is that the three suspects travelled by boat to the Northern Fishermen Cooperative. Following the shooting they got back into the boat to make quick getaway.
