The cops in that situation were faced with a grim outcome they could never have envisioned. After all, they just told him to put on a mask, and then… a short time after he was dead, bleeding out on the hood of the patrol truck.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams discussed policing in tough times.

Chester Williams - Police Commissioner

"First and foremost I want to offer my sincere condolences to the family of the deceased person. I was brief about the situation, it is indeed sad, not only for the family but also for the police and like you said it is indeed difficult times. The police do not know what people are facing at any given time when they are approached by the police and so every day I harp to the police officers the importance of enforcing these regulations and so on that day in question the police did saw the individual, he didn't have on a mask and he was approached by the police and he was told about it and there was some confrontation and from what I am told he went into a house and he might have gotten a knife inflicted injuries to himself and then came out back and confronted the police again while bleeding and again, the police were exposed to many things, but at the end of the day it is what we have sworn to do and despite these challenges, despite the risk that we are confronted with every day we still ensure that we go out and do our jobs to the best of our ability."
