A day after the accident, another life was lost, but in this instance, 21-year-old Kevaughan Morris was murdered.

Morris was inside Cumberbatch park on Caesar Ridge Road when he was shot around 8:00 on Saturday night. His family thought he was at home, sleeping next to his toddler, when they got the news that he had been killed. Courtney Menzies spoke with his common-law wife and has this story.

A 21-year-old is dead and his family cannot figure out why someone would target him. According to those closest to him, Kevaughan Morris was a quiet young man who spent his days taking care of his 2-year-old daughter and riding his bicycle.

But on Saturday night, he was inside a park when he was fatally shot. In the spot where his body was found, a single candle stands.

His common-law wife told us off camera today that she had just spoken with him moments before the gunman pulled the trigger.

"I went to play some cards and he called me and he said, babe where are you? And I told him, I come to play some card, he said, when are you coming? I said, I will come soon, I'm with my neighbor, he said okay then, make sure you come soon, I told him I'm coming soon because I have to come before shop closes because I have to buy. And then he said, okay, then little after that I get a call from his mom saying that they shot him, so I tell his mom never because he just call me and she said yes."

"When I reach hospital, I run straight in, and they said come out and I told them no and they said come out and they said he didn't make it."

And while they continue to grieve the loss of their son, husband, and father, Morris' family questions why someone would callously take away his life.

Voice of: Common-law Wife
"He doesn't talk, he doesn't fool with people, he doesn't have friends, he only has his friend who died the other day and he have my next neighbor that's his friend, he doesn't have friend, he stay home with the baby with my baby. They don't know what they did to us."

"To our family, he's the person who keeps the family going. That is all I can say. He will say I will check your pulse to see if you're alright. Like he would do something for us to go on crazy and when he done he will say I'm just checking your pulse."

"Me and his mom, we don't know what to do. We turn so, we turn so, we see him. This morning I woke up and I said but why didn't he come home? Why did he sleep out? Then my baby said, police took my daddy. They don't know what they did to me and my baby and his mom."

While his family puzzles over his death, police say he was the target, though they don't have a motive either.

Senior Supt. Hilberto Romero, Deputy Head NCB
