Last night, you heard what the Police Commissioner and the Minister of Home Affairs had to say about the crime trends for the first quarter of this year. Well, the Belize Crime Observatory has provided a full breakdown of the numbers for the first 4 months.
The total number of all major crimes for January to April of 2021was 267. Last year around this time, that number was 302.
Turning now to each individual type of major crime, murder is down for this first quarter to 30 countrywide. Last year at the same time, it was 41.
The Belize District has seen the most number of murders for this year so far at 14. But, around the same time period last year, 26 had already occurred. So, there 12 fewer murders. Last year, the Cayo District only witnessed 4 cases, but this year, they are already up to 10.
Robberies are up this quarter at 49 when compared to the 33 reports during the same time last year. There were 19 cases reported in the Belize district this year, which is a slight increase from 14 during the same time period last year. The number of cases tripled in the Cayo district from 5 last year, to 16 this year.
There were 148 reports of burglary for the first quarter of this year. Around the same time last year, there were 173 reports.
For theft, there were 23 reports this year so far; around the same time last year, there were 28 reports.
