And finally for tonight, yesterday we showed you a field trip that 52 city kids took to Spanish Lookout. According to the OC Eastern Division, ACP Howell Gillett, the trip served as a crime prevention method, showing kids another side of life. And prevention seems to be ACP Gillett's preferred policing style, as he told us yesterday:
ACP Howell Gillett, OC, Eastern Division
"There are underlying conditions that cause crime. I don't want to go into the details of them because I believe by saying them, it would increase in some way, but we want to go after the root causes of crime. Like you've seen yesterday, we went into the Kraal Road, River Street area and by the use of inmates from the Kolbe Foundation we were able to clear four lots in that area. We believe those lots were used to hide weapons for criminals to stalk each other and we'll be doing more of those, I believe tomorrow we'll be taken more inmates to areas that we see are crime prone areas, so it's not just the arresting and charge, yes we're doing that, we're going after the gang members, we want them realise that if you don't want to change then the only place you can be is at the Belize Central Prison. But while we're doing that, we want to take away the things that came crime, poor lighting condition, overgrown lots, especially in the city. We mediate, well not us the police, but we have a group called the Leadership Intervention Unit, they're the ones who mediate these feuding factions so that is working but there's lots of work to be done, we didn't reach here just yesterday, so we have to do a lot to achieve more."
