Tonight, an ex-gang boss's family says he was shot despite being way out of the gangster world.
Darren Banks was shot and killed on Ebony at just about 5:30 yesterday evening by a man who fired multiple times and left him dead in a city drain.
Tonight his family says that his death was downright unfair.
7News spoke off camera to Nunez's sister and a family friend who was close enough to call him "Uncle Banks". Cherisse Halsall has that story.
There was panic near Mahogany street yesterday evening at just about 4:00 pm when Oleander Street resident and former gang boss Darren Banks gunned down - his leg ended in a flash.
It's has left his family devastated and bewildered. They say that despite his past he'd come too far to go down like this.
Voice of Sister
"Mien... da how they have him in the drain like a piece of pig or floor cloth or something. Why didn't they pick up his body out of the drain and try to take him to the hospital because they were telling me that he was still fighting to hear, no? So then my two brothers came and they cursed them because they said the same thing how could they not have taken out his body."
"He didn't give any trouble. When I saw my poor brother down there in the drain it was a shock. I just felt like passing out. I don't know what to do."
"Lots of people hated him so he changed his life and he's a mental patient."
And while Darren Banks was no longer a gang combatant - someone saw him as a target - and the family does have an idea of one possible player in Darren's demise.
Voice of Sister
"I want the killer to come out and show his face or her face and the woman who's texting him, I want to know who is the woman with the two babies, I don't know who is the woman."
Reporter:
"Tell us more about that what's happening there?"
Voice of Sister
"I don't know the first time I heard about it because my brother mentioned it to me already but I do not know who is the woman so I have to get down deep into it."
Reporter:
"And you feel she is connected somehow?"
Voice of Sister
"Yes, some woman leads him to his death but I do not know the woman."
And despite his brutal end Banks seemed to have garnered quite a bit of goodwill in the neighbourhood.
Voice of Friend
"Well, I used to call him Uncle Banks you know. He use to pass and we just use to have casual conversations. I admire him, because he had like a business aspect about him. He's like instead of just staying home and not doing anything, he just use to move around and he use to do his own stuff to make money, so in a way I admire him because of that. When they found out that I mean a lot of people cried, because he was there for us. He use to sit down and talk to us about different topics that we like to hear girls, money - different pastime activities as well, so it's sad in a way. Its little bit gloomy in the neighbourhood itself, because he was like a father figure and so it's going to be a little while until we get over it, but I don't think it's something that we are going to retaliate or anything like that, because we understand the type of lifestyle that he had before, but we are sad because the person that he became was a real father figure to us. I mean I could have my kids around him and he'd like come pull up and hug my kids. I am not a guy who is out on the streets, so how close we were. Thats the type of person that he was."
And while the police have been busy picking up boys from Bank's hood his sister says they're looking in the wrong place.
Voice of Sister
"As anything happens around here they go and pick up Battery, Big Tom all of those Gang members around here but none of them is involved in it. I don't know why they don't go to the Ghost Town areas and look after them."
