Paying for votes - it's the oldest game in Belize's distorted democracy - and, while it is a crime - not a single person has even been successfully prosecuted for it - though, we all know, it happens a lot.
And that element of political culture is just what political scientist Dylan Vernon explores in his new book, named Political Clientelism and Democracy in Belize: From My Hand to Yours.
It was launched today in Belize at the UWI Open Campus and Vernon explained the basic everyday reality covered by the fancy word: clientelism:
Dylan Vernon will be talking about the "hand wash hand" system of politics, and taking the tough questions when he is the guest on JV Uncut next week Wednesday August third.
The book sells for a hundred dollars and is distributed by UWI open campus on Princess Margaret Drive. You can also buy it online with a 30% promotional discount.
